Word on the street is that chronic pain is resistant to treatment. It’s pain you’ll have to manage forever and there’s no telling where it came from or if it will ever go away. If you ask me, that’s an unacceptable response given the magnitude of symptoms chronic pain sufferers deal with. Unfortunately, we are a one-pill-fix-all kind of culture. If we could just take a pill to relieve the pain, we could get on with our ever busying lives. But chronic pain has formed as a response to our pill-popping culture. Don’t see the connection?
Here’s a difficult truth: It’s all in your head.
Conditions like fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, nerve pain, low back pain, migraines, and other non-tissue damage related conditions have a source and a cure. Both the source and the cure are your brain function. It’s all in your head. It’s no wonder top medical sites and doctors treat chronic pain like stubborn chameleon unicorns, you manifest them to be. Your pain moves, elusively avoiding your massage therapists hands, your whole back hurts, unless you forget about it, when you talk to your mother in law, you get a weird burning rash, your wrist pain is exacerbated by 3 mile an hour winds and nothing you can do but sit in this weird position staring at the wall will help.
Your pain manifests as this mysterious, elusive, highly conditional unicorn that is untouchable even by the most chemically endowed little pills because you brain is manifesting it to be so in response to underlying stress. Until you relieve the stressors that are causing the pain, the pain will rear its nasty head, and rightfully so!
Pain is a message from your brain telling you to stop doing what you’re doing.
The message says that even though you’re expected to do A, B and C today, you are not functioning at a capacity to do A, B or C so here’s some pain to ensure you don’t even make an attempt. That might sound farfetched but so does debilitating pain with no tissue damage, if you ask me.
Now that we’ve address the unicorn, let’s move on to the deeper issues of chronic pain. Knowing that chronic pain is created in the brain, we can start asking questions such as: What trauma have I faced and not dealt with that keeps my sympathetic nervous system active and alert? What parts of my brain are not working as they should that might prompt painful threat responses? What am I not physically taking care of properly that might spark internal messages to stop? In what ways am I not be heard, trusted, valued, respected that cause a deep sense of subconscious dissonance with my environment?
These are serious questions that apply to a surprising amount of our population. The thread that connects these pieces is the core of Smart Move: well rounded brain activation helps you learn to listen to your guts and intuition which leads you to make real moves to align your environment for your health. People with chronic pain are often dissonant with their pre-cognitive minds and/or have damaged compasses for moving through the world. If the pre-cognitive brain does not feel safe moving about the world, it will tell you in the most effective way it knows how, through pain.
